Battery-operated alarms provide a cheap alternative to interconnecting mains wired some alarms, although mains wired provide a more reliable source of protection.

Whichever form of product you chose for protection the following pointers should be adhered to for correct detector/ alarm placement:

At least one alarm on each storey — no more than 7m (22') from the doors to the living room and kitchen and no more than 3m (9') from each bedroom door.

Alarms should be mounted on the ceiling, at least 300mm (1') from any wall, light, heater or air-conditioning outlet.

In order to receive the correct detection and to avoid false alarms throughout different parts of the house appropriate alarms with different types of sensors should be fitted. See the table below for the type of sensors used for the different spaces around your home:
